Around 4 p.m. in late October, the light turns gold, then gray, and something in you sags. If you're in Arvada and feeling that heavy, drained feeling, you're far from alone. It's hard to tell from the inside whether this is a tired season, burnout, or something like depression, or grief that deserves more support. Here's how to sort it out, from a trauma and grief therapist who'd rather hear from you early than late.
Is it just a tired season?
A seasonal slump usually eases with rest, daylight, and a slower weekend. That's your body adjusting to less light. You might crave more sleep and hit a wall around 4 p.m., yet still feel like yourself. A good night or a 20-minute walk at lunch helps, and you bounce back.
What does burnout look like?
Burnout is exhaustion tied to what you carry. Picture the parent running on empty, who loves their kids and still counts the minutes to bedtime. Or the high achiever who can't switch off, answering email at 10 p.m. and feeling guilty when they stop. Other signs include dread on Sunday night and rest that doesn't refill you.
When could it be depression instead of burnout?
It may be depression when the heaviness follows you past the workday and into things you usually love.
Your mind won't slow down, even when your body is spent.
Things that used to feel good now feel flat, for 2 weeks or more.
Sadness or numbness shows up around a loss, even an old one.
Burnout and depression can overlap, and you can have both. Naming which one you're dealing with changes what helps. You don't have to sort it out alone. That's what a first session is for.

Do you need to be in crisis to ask for help?
No. You don't need a breaking point. Being tired of dragging yourself through the day is reason enough. Daylight saving time ends November 1 this year, and evenings get darker fast, so now is a smart time to build support before it gets harder. If you're ever in crisis, call or text 988.
What happens in a first session with me?
Your first session is a conversation, not a test. We'll talk about what's been draining you and what you'd like to feel different. You set the pace. Not sure what to call it? That's fine. Come as you are. I see clients in Arvada and virtually across Colorado and Virginia. Book your first session here.
